PUTRAJAYA, Feb 14: Malaysia’s Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar has been appointed to chair a special investigation committee tasked with examining allegations surrounding share ownership involving Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
The committee was formed following a Cabinet decision on Friday to ensure a thorough, fair, and transparent investigation into the matter, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said in a statement.
According to Shamsul Azri, the panel will conduct a comprehensive inquiry and later submit its findings and recommendations to the Prime Minister and the relevant disciplinary authorities for further action in line with established procedures.
The special committee will also include Public Service Department Director-General Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz and Treasury Secretary-General Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican.
The probe follows a recent Bloomberg report that suggested possible breaches of government regulations related to Azam’s shareholdings. Azam has denied any wrongdoing, stating that his acquisition of shares was carried out transparently and did not violate any laws. He also claimed that he no longer holds any shares in any company and that his trading account is currently empty, which he said can be verified with Bursa Malaysia.
Azam has since initiated legal action against Bloomberg, describing the allegations as defamatory, misleading, and damaging to both his personal reputation and the integrity of the MACC.
Bloomberg later published another report alleging the MACC’s involvement in a so-called “corporate mafia” network, which Azam strongly rejected. He reiterated his willingness to cooperate with an independent investigation, insisting that he has nothing to hide.
Emphasizing the importance of transparency, Azam said an independent inquiry is necessary to protect his integrity and maintain public confidence in the MACC as an institution.
