TEHRAN: Iran has stressed that any proposed agreement with the United States remains subject to approval by the country’s relevant decision-making bodies amid growing speculation over a possible breakthrough in negotiations between the two nations.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said reports regarding the timing, location, and signing of a potential agreement should be treated as media speculation until an official decision is made.
Speaking on Thursday, Baqaei emphasised that Iran’s established decision-making process must be completed before any understanding can be finalised.
“The relevant authorities must carefully review and reach a final decision regarding the text of the proposed understanding and any potential agreement,” he said, according to Iran’s state news agency.
He added that the Iranian government would make a formal announcement only after the competent bodies approve the proposed arrangement.
Baqaei also dismissed reports concerning the format or venue of a possible signing ceremony, noting that such matters would only be discussed after a final decision has been reached.
“Any discussions regarding how or where an agreement might be signed remain premature. What has been reported so far is largely based on media speculation,” he said.
His remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump stated that he had cancelled planned military strikes against Iran and suggested that negotiations were nearing completion.
Speaking at the White House, Trump told reporters that a major settlement had been reached and that the finalisation of documents could take place within the coming days.
“We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran, and we’re going to be subject to finalisation of documents, which should get done over the next few days,” Trump said, adding that a signing ceremony could potentially be held in Europe.
Meanwhile, Iranian media reported that a draft understanding is currently under review by senior authorities. Reports indicated that the likelihood of approval is considered relatively high after Washington reportedly accepted elements of a proposed Iranian framework for an agreement.
While optimism appears to be growing on both sides, Tehran has reiterated that no agreement will be considered official until it passes through the country’s formal approval process.
The latest developments have fuelled speculation that months of diplomatic efforts between Iran and the United States may be approaching a decisive stage, although officials have cautioned that no final agreement has yet been announced.
