Police Destroy Suspicious Box Initially Detected with High Radiation Reading in Sri Petaling

KUALA LUMPUR: The Bomb Disposal Unit (UPB) destroyed a suspicious plastic box found outside a shop in Sri Petaling here on Monday.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said police received a report about the object at 12.57pm from a 33-year-old woman.

“Preliminary investigations found that the object registered a relatively high radiation reading during an inspection at the scene.

“The Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters Bomb Disposal Unit, together with Bukit Aman’s CBRE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives) Unit and the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, were deployed to the scene to conduct further inspections and assessments,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Fadil said the Bomb Disposal Unit subsequently used a Recoilless Disruptor 5.0 to destroy the object.

“Following the operation, several boxes believed to contain colourful building block-type items were found inside the suspicious box, which was successfully destroyed.

“However, further checks by the Atomic Energy Department confirmed that no radioactive readings were detected at the scene,” he said.

Fadil said police had opened an investigation paper under Section 506 of the Penal Code, and investigations are ongoing.

“The public is advised not to spread false information that could cause alarm or pose a threat to public safety.
