KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger ASEAN unity as the regional bloc navigates an increasingly complex global landscape marked by geopolitical rivalry, economic fragmentation, and uncertainty.

In a message marking ASEAN’s 58th anniversary, Anwar said Malaysia was honored to hold the chairmanship this year, fully aware of the weight of responsibility during a pivotal moment for international relations, trade, and everyday life.

“Fifty-eight years ago, ASEAN was founded with a simple yet enduring purpose: to maintain peace, build trust, and foster cooperation among neighbors. That vision remains the solid foundation of our community today,” he said in a 4-minute 51-second video shared on Facebook.

Anwar stressed that ASEAN’s ability to speak with one voice, coordinate effectively, and safeguard shared interests would determine its relevance in the years ahead. From digital transformation to decarbonization, he said the bloc must equip its people with the skills and infrastructure needed to adapt and thrive.

He noted that with a combined GDP nearing USD 4 trillion and a population exceeding 670 million, ASEAN has the potential to become the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2030. However, he cautioned that economic scale alone was insufficient; growth must be inclusive, sustainable, and widely shared.

“This is the focus of Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and the legacy we hope to hand over to the Philippines when they assume the role in 2026,” he added.

The Prime Minister also welcomed progress on Timor-Leste’s accession, saying its inclusion as the 11th member would make ASEAN a truly complete representation of Southeast Asia.

Highlighting the ASEAN Vision 2045 roadmap for a resilient, innovative, and people-centered future, Anwar said success would depend on immediate action, from boosting regional connectivity to ensuring food and energy security.

He reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to ASEAN Centrality, stressing that the bloc must remain the heart of regional dialogue and cooperation while constructively addressing pressing issues such as the crisis in Myanmar.

Anwar described the anniversary as both a celebration of achievements and a reminder of the challenges ahead. “What will carry us forward is the same approach that built this community from the start: strategic vision, mutual respect and trust, and a commitment to working together,” he said.

“On behalf of the Malaysian Government, I wish all ASEAN citizens a happy 58th ASEAN Day. May our cooperation remain strong, and may ASEAN continue to stand as a beacon of peace, progress, and unity in this region and beyond.”
