RCI Calls Over Azam Baki Share Allegations Must Be Evidence-Based, Says Anwar’s Political Secretary

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24: Political Secretary to the Finance Minister Kamil Munim has cautioned against premature calls to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into share ownership allegations involving Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, stressing that any such move must be grounded in credible evidence and legal process.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Kamil said proposals for an RCI should not be driven by speculation or hearsay, emphasizing that Malaysia’s commitment to the rule of law requires decisions to be based on verified facts.

“I respect any proposal to set up an RCI and agree in principle that the truth must be determined through a transparent process grounded in the law. In a country that upholds the rule of law, any action must be based on established facts and credible evidence,” he said.

Kamil warned against prolonged preemptive political debates that could undermine due process, noting that similar allegations regarding the Chief Justice’s appointment had previously proven unfounded.

He urged the public and political actors to allow existing investigative mechanisms—including inquiries, special committees, and other legal processes—to carry out their mandates to gather and assess evidence thoroughly.

Kamil also highlighted that the government had acted swiftly by ordering an inquiry following a recent Bloomberg report, demonstrating its commitment to transparency and accountability.

“Our primary aim is to ensure justice is based on facts, not perception or political pressure. If the evidence later indicates an RCI is needed, it will be pursued transparently, responsibly, and with integrity,” he added.

Earlier, the government announced the formation of a special investigation committee into Azam Baki’s share ownership, chaired by Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar.
