Malaysia Signs MOUs With Turkey, South Korea To Strengthen Defence Asset Procurement

PORT DICKSON: Malaysia has taken a new step in defence asset procurement by signing two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Turkey and South Korea through the government-to-government (G2G) approach, which is expected to strengthen the capabilities of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).

Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, said both MoUs mark the beginning of the implementation of the G2G approach, which will be adopted as the primary method for certain defence procurement projects.

According to him, several other countries, including Italy and France, have also expressed interest in establishing similar cooperation with Malaysia.

“We already have two MoUs that we have signed to facilitate government-to-government procurement, one with Turkey and another with South Korea.

“There are also many other countries that have expressed their intention to undertake government-to-government procurement, including Italy and France,” he said after attending the Southern Zone Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) Welfare Programme at Kem Sirusa here today.

Mohamed Khaled said the G2G method was introduced to replace the previous practice, which involved a tender process through original manufacturers and agents.

He said through the new approach, the government not only obtains more competitive pricing, but also receives supply guarantees from the supplier government.
