SHAH ALAM: The Selangor State Government plans to provide free meals to approximately 70,000 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates in the state through the special Selangor Nutrition (NutriSel) SPM 2026 initiative to ensure students’ welfare and nutritional needs are taken care of throughout the examination period.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the initiative aims to safeguard the welfare and nutritional needs of Form Five students while sitting for their examinations, particularly for core subject papers.

According to him, the provision of meals is expected to help students concentrate fully on answering examination questions without having to worry about food during the examination period.

“Throughout the examinations, we will provide breakfast or appropriate meals, including lunch, to these students so that they can enter the examination hall without any obstacles and feel more motivated to answer the questions,” he said.

He said this when met after distributing food packs under the Selangor Nutrition Programme (NutriSel) at Sekolah Rendah Agama Integrasi (SRAI) Seksyen 19 here today.

Amirudin said the special NutriSel SPM 2026 initiative is a continuation of the NutriSel programme, which was first implemented in August to help ensure adequate nutrition among students from low-income families.

The programme targets 104,640 primary and secondary school students from the B40 income group, with a total allocation exceeding RM12.5 million.

Of the total, RM7.82 million is contributed by local authorities (PBT), while the remaining RM4.73 million is allocated through the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN).

In a related development, the state government is also implementing the Mega NutriSel initiative, distributing free bread and boxed milk to 993,670 students across 962 schools throughout Selangor.

The programme is being implemented in collaboration with strategic partners Farm Fresh and Gardenia to ensure that more students benefit from the nutritional assistance.

He said distribution under Mega NutriSel would continue until November 6 or 7, before the SPM examinations begin, with all students receiving the assistance through a one-off distribution.

“The allocation is not as large as that for the basic NutriSel programme because we want to include all students. In Shah Alam alone, the initiative covers nearly 125,000 students,” he said.

The nutrition programmes are being jointly implemented by UPEN, local authorities, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) and the Selangor State Education Department (JPNS).
