KUALA LUMPUR: The country’s supply of basic necessities, including food and beverages, is sufficient for the next six months.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the current situation has not reached an emergency level that would require the country to implement contingency measures.

He said the government remains prepared to face any emergency and has made adequate preparations.

“We do not see any need for such measures because our food security and stockpile levels are sufficient.

“We know that we have the capacity to sustain ourselves for at least six months, particularly in terms of food security.

“The government has made every effort to ensure that Malaysians have sufficient basic necessities, including essential goods, and that we are not in a state of emergency. God willing, we are far from such a situation,” he said.

He said this at a press conference after the Malaysia-China Cooperation Meeting on Investment, Trade and Economic Empowerment at the Pavilion Hotel here today.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, was commenting on international media reports that 33 countries had issued guidelines encouraging their citizens to stockpile food, drinking water and other basic necessities in preparation for potential emergencies.

The measures come as the world faces various threats, including wars, extreme weather, power supply disruptions and cyberattacks.

Among the countries strengthening their emergency preparedness campaigns are France and the United Kingdom (UK), which have advised residents to prepare sufficient supplies to last at least 72 hours, or three days.
