MANILA, Sept 21 (VoM): Tens of thousands of Filipinos poured into the streets nationwide on Sunday to protest alleged corruption in a multi-billion-dollar government flood control project, sparking the country’s largest demonstrations since the scandal came to light.

In the capital, Manila, massive rallies were staged at Luneta Park and the EDSA People Power Monument, the historic site of the 1986 uprising that toppled former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. over corruption and human rights abuses. Organizers estimated that around 130,000 people attended, with nearly 80,000 gathering at Luneta Park alone.

Some protesters attempted to march towards Malacañang Palace but were blocked by police barricades. Tensions escalated when masked youths hurled stones at officers and set tires ablaze, chanting, “For the country! At least 12 protesters were arrested, while several police officers, demonstrators, and journalists sustained injuries during the clashes.

“Many are angry, and I’m here with my family and friends to show that we stand against these thieves,” said protester Raymond Mendros. “With the billions spent on this project, there should be no more flooding. But the flooding continues. It’s really disappointing.”

The demonstrations follow President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s announcement in July of an official investigation into the controversial project. The growing public outcry has intensified pressure on his administration to ensure transparency and accountability.
