Tactical Errors Cost France Defeat
MIAMI: Didier Deschamps admitted that he was fully responsible for France’s lacklustre first-half performance when they lost 4-6 to England in the 2026 World Cup third-place playoff.
The defeat was a bitter farewell gift for Deschamps after serving 14 years with Les Bleus.
In his 185th and final appearance as France head coach, Deschamps watched his side concede four goals in the first half before mounting a spirited fightback after the break.
However, the comeback came too late as England managed to hold on to their lead to secure third place.
The 57-year-old coach did not hide when admitting that tactical errors and his side’s failure to control the game in the opening 45 minutes were the main reasons for the painful defeat.
“It is still a defeat, but we were 0-4 down. We produced an unacceptable first-half performance. We gave a better response in the second half, but it was too late,” said Deschamps.
According to him, France actually had chances to level at 4-4 after showing their true character in the second half, but they were too eager in pursuit of goals, which prevented them from completing the comeback mission.
“We had two chances to make it 4-4, but we were too eager to attack. That is what we did, but we failed to execute it. It is my fault because I did not do what I should have in the first half,” he said.
Despite the disappointment, Deschamps felt that his players’ reaction after the break managed to restore some of France’s dignity, as they had arrived in North America with high hopes of lifting the World Cup trophy for the third time after their successes in 1998 and 2018.
He also acknowledged that the semi-final defeat to Spain was the turning point that shattered Les Bleus’ dream of reaching the World Cup final for the third consecutive time after the 2018 and 2022 editions.
“We failed against Spain, and they knew how to beat us. This is a group of players with high football quality. We had enough talent to achieve better results.
“From a human perspective, it has been a beautiful journey. Eight weeks with the team, it meant a lot,” he said.
Deschamps, who led France to win the 2018 World Cup and finish as runners-up in 2022, admitted that failing to end the campaign with a victory still left a deep impact, given that millions of supporters back home had expected something special from the national squad.
Meanwhile, the French Football Federation (FFF) paid high tribute to Deschamps, who is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the country’s football history, having managed 185 matches and recorded 120 wins throughout his tenure.
