Shawn Breaks 10-Year Record

KUALA LUMPUR: University of Malaya (UM) runner Shawn Roshan Singh broke a decade-old record in the 1,500-metre (m) event at the Higher Education Institution Games (SUKIPT) 2026 at the UM Arena today.

Shawn clocked a time of 4 minutes 3.43 seconds (s) to win the gold medal, thereby erasing the record of 4:05.11s set by fellow UM athlete M. Kesavan in 2016.

More notably, Shawn admitted that he did not set the SUKIPT record as his main target, but rather only wanted to achieve a personal best time.

“The strategy of accelerating from the start of the race allowed me to set a new record,” he said.

Shawn, who had to run alone after other runners failed to keep up with his pace, admitted to being slightly disappointed that he could not clock a faster time.

Jed Teh Qi Xian from Multimedia University (MMU) finished second with a time of 4:11.67s, while Mohd Akram Mohd Hafez from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) took third place (4:15.95s).
