SEA Games 2027 Officially Competes In 43 Sports

KUALA LUMPUR: The Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) Council has approved five additional sports for the 2027 SEA Games, bringing the total to 43 sports.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Secretary General Datuk Mohd Nasir Ali said the five sports approved by the SEAGF Council were dance, ice hockey, kabaddi, padel and teqball.

He said the approval came after a series of discussions between SEAGF and the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC), following the council’s receipt of 30 appeals from National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to include additional sports after 38 sports were approved in April.

“The SEAGF Council has just approved this proposal and we confirm that there will be no further appeals or additions to the sports programme for the 2027 SEA Games.

“The final total is 43 sports,” he said at a press conference after the SEAGF Council Meeting at a hotel here today.

He said MASOC is expected to announce the full list of disciplines and medal events by September this year, in line with the SEA Games Charter and Regulations.

Meanwhile, MASOC Chief Executive Officer Datuk Rashid Sidek said the council’s decision has officially finalised the sports programme for the biennial games, with no further additions possible unless another SEAGF Council meeting is held.

“The main point is that the number of added sports is only five and that is final, because if we want to add more, we would need to hold another meeting. So this meeting is the final meeting for SEAGF to approve the number of sports, which now stands at 43,” he said.

Rashid said MASOC is still identifying suitable venues for the five new sports, with venues for the 38 previously agreed-upon sports already finalised.

He said discussions are ongoing with Sarawak and Penang to host several additional sports events, but most are expected to take place in Kuala Lumpur.
