US-Iran Tensions Risk Dragging Entire West Asia into Conflict – Anwar

PETALING JAYA: The United States and Iran have been urged to halt any escalation of conflict and immediately return to diplomacy and the understanding reached last June.

This is because, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the conflict can only be resolved through political and diplomatic approaches.

According to him, the world should not be forced to bear the consequences of a wider regional war.

“I am deeply concerned by the renewed escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran.

“The latest exchange of attacks, which has now gone beyond the parties directly involved and spread to other countries in the region, risks dragging the entire West Asia into a more horrific and destructive conflict,” he said in a Facebook post today.

He said that parties with the greatest capacity to shape the direction of this situation bear a special responsibility to exercise restraint and prevent further escalation of the conflict.

“The sovereignty of other nations cannot be disregarded. No military objective can be used as an excuse to expose civilians to an ever-widening conflict.

“Economic measures that burden civilians and undermine diplomatic efforts risk worsening this crisis, rather than resolving it,” he said.
