No Malaysians affected by earthquake in Kyushu

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that no Malaysians have been affected by the earthquake in Kyushu, Japan, which triggered a tsunami warning yesterday.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo, is closely monitoring developments following the earthquake.

“Although no fatalities have been reported, authorities are still assessing the possibility of injuries and serious damage.

“The Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo is actively coordinating efforts with local authorities to obtain further information,” said the ministry.

According to the ministry, Malaysians in the affected areas are advised to stay away from coastal areas, remain vigilant, and follow current developments and instructions from local authorities.

“Malaysians, especially those in the affected areas, are advised to register their whereabouts at https://ekonsular.kln.gov.my/.

“Malaysians who require consular assistance can contact the Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo at +81-3-3476-3840 or +81-80-4322-3366,” it added.

Yesterday, it was reported that the tsunami warning for the Pacific coast of the western Kyushu and Shikoku main islands has been lifted, except for Miyazaki.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1, which struck southwestern Japan at 4:43 PM yesterday, initially triggered tsunami warnings for Kyushu, Shikoku, and Miyazaki.

However, no major damage has been reported.
