KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, announced today that he is offering himself as a candidate for the presidency of the Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA).

Moved by the current crisis facing the Kuala Lumpur City FC (KL City) team, he aims to rescue it from the risk of ‘closing down.’

“I am offering myself as a candidate for the KLFA presidency at this year’s KLFA Annual General Meeting (AGM).

“I have also conducted a series of discussions with corporate figures, professionals, and government institutions, as well as representatives from affiliated clubs, to lead KLFA,” he said.

He, who is the Member of Parliament for Setiawangsa, made the announcement in a video posted on TikTok.

According to Nik Nazmi, who is a member of KLFA, as a dedicated fan of KL City, it is necessary to take appropriate action.

He said he is ready to listen to the views of the affiliated clubs and KL City supporters.

“Although politicians come and go at KLFA, it’s not about gaining popularity. There is a significant responsibility to restore the dignity and trust of KL City football fans,” he said.

Recently, it was reported that KL City is at risk of ‘closing down’ or disappearing from the Malaysian League if outstanding issues are not resolved by the end of the season.

This follows revelations by naturalized player Paulo Josue, who admitted he has not received his salary since January or, more accurately, has been playing football ‘for free’ for the past seven months.

Arena Metro also revealed that the real issue behind the problem is related to ‘dirty politics,’ with former KLFA President Khalid Abdul Samad admitting that it was caused by a reluctance to release funds for the team as long as he was not reappointed as KLFA President.

For the record, the appointment of new KLFA Committee members was supposed to take place earlier this year, but it is understood that it has not yet been completed due to ongoing financial audits of the club.
