SHAH ALAM: A Rohingya ethnic man admitted to paying RM10,000 to an agent to arrange his illegal entry into Malaysia before he was detained by the General Operations Force (PGA) at the Kota Bharu Bus Terminal, Lembah Sireh, Kota Bharu last night.

The 24-year-old man was detained by members of the 8th Battalion PGA through Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan at around 7.50 p.m. while waiting for a bus heading to Permaisuri, Setiu, Terengganu, to seek new employment opportunities.

Southeast Brigade PGA Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Radzi Hussain said, based on investigations, the man entered Malaysia in 2023 after a long journey from Myanmar.

According to him, the man took a boat for a month from Rathedaung, Rakhine, Myanmar, heading to Thailand before continuing his journey to the Malaysian border.

“The man admitted to paying RM10,000 to an agent to arrange his journey from Myanmar until entering Malaysia,” he said, as reported by Harian Metro.

He said upon arriving in Thailand at an unknown location, the man walked through forest areas heading to southern Thailand for about three days.

He said the suspect was then brought into the country through the Sungai Golok route before settling in Malaysia.

According to Ahmad Radzi, the man admitted to having been in Malaysia for about three years and worked as a construction labourer around Kota Bharu.

He said checks found that the suspect failed to produce any valid identification documents before being detained and taken to the Criminal Investigation Division of the Kota Bharu District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further action.

The case is being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963.
