KUALA LUMPUR: Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has revealed that he is still unable to control his leg months after a serious fall earlier this year, describing the experience as feeling “as if I don’t have legs.”
The 100-year-old statesman shared details of the incident in a recent podcast clip posted on Instagram, recounting how the accident occurred in January while he was exercising at his residence in The Mines.
“I just lost control of my legs before I fell,” he said, adding that the fall resulted in a fractured hip bone and joint, as well as a head injury.
Dr. Mahathir described the pain following the incident as severe, noting that it took several days before doctors were able to bring it under control.
“It was very painful. It was difficult for them to help reduce my pain,” he said.
He was admitted on Jan 6 to the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur for treatment. Due to his advanced age, doctors opted against surgery, instead recommending physiotherapy as the primary course of recovery.
Now, three months after the accident, Dr. Mahathir said his condition has improved slightly, allowing him to stand. However, he continues to face major mobility challenges.
“I can stand now, but I can’t control the leg,” he said. “It is as if I don’t have legs.”
Despite the setback, the veteran leader’s remarks highlight both the physical toll of the injury and the ongoing challenges of recovery at an advanced age.
