3-Year-Old Boy Dies After Falling Off Victoria Bridge, Kuala Kangsar

SUNGAI SIPUT: A three-year-old boy died after he was believed to have fallen from a height of five metres at the Victoria Bridge in Enggor here.

In the incident at around 6 pm yesterday, the victim was confirmed dead at around 7.40 pm last night at Kuala Kangsar Hospital.

Sungai Siput District Police Chief, Superintendent Charan Ai Wan, said the incident occurred when the victim, along with his 42-year-old father, was walking on the historic bridge, which is generally known as one of the tourist attractions.

“At the time of the incident, the victim was walking on the bridge with his father, holding his hand, and then fell from a height of five metres through a hole in the bridge.

“Immediately after falling onto the paved road beneath the bridge, the victim, who was still alive at the time, was rushed to the hospital emergency ward but was confirmed dead at the hospital at 7.40 pm,” he said when contacted today.

He said the victim, who was from Kluang, Johor, had come on holiday with his family to Victoria Bridge, Kuala Kangsar.

Meanwhile, a check at the location today found that the iconic bridge has been closed to tourists for safety reasons, with the area cordoned off with crossing prohibition tape by the Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council (MPKK) and police.

A stall trader near the location, who wished to be known only as Nyah, said her husband and son-in-law, who were manning the stall at the time, heard a loud noise, initially thinking it was a bag falling, before being shocked to realise it was a child falling from a height.

“Since yesterday was a public holiday in conjunction with the National Day celebration, there were indeed many tourists, including those with young children, coming to Victoria Bridge to take souvenir photos,” she said.
