KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 : The Road Transport Department Malaysia (JPJ) has intensified its crackdown on illegal street racing, issuing 283 summonses and seizing 26 motorcycles during a special operation along the Duta–Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE).
The early morning operation, carried out between 3am and 5am on April 12, was conducted by JPJ’s Falcon Unit following ongoing public complaints about dangerous racing activities.
Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Hamidi Adam said the integrated enforcement effort involved cooperation with the Royal Malaysia Police, the Malaysian Highway Authority, and highway concessionaire KESTURI.
Authorities identified several hotspots for illegal racing, including areas around Batu Muda, Greenwood, and Sri Gombak, particularly during weekends.
“Among the main complaints were large gatherings disrupting public order, the use of highways as illegal racing tracks, dangerous riding behavior, and excessive noise from modified vehicles,” Hamidi said in a statement.
He also raised concern over the involvement of minors, revealing that teenagers as young as 13 to 14 years old were found participating in such activities, often without their parents’ knowledge.
During inspections, enforcement officers uncovered multiple serious offenses, including missing side mirrors, improper or absent registration numbers, illegal “fancy” plates, and the use of registration numbers belonging to other vehicles. Other violations included extreme exhaust modifications, absence of rear brakes, and missing engine numbers.
“Some individuals acted aggressively and attempted to flee from enforcement action,” he added.
Authorities estimate that some of the motorcycles involved had been modified at costs reaching up to RM10,000 solely for illegal racing purposes.
JPJ stressed that all enforcement actions were carried out under the Road Transport Act 1987, highlighting that illegal racing not only violates the law but also poses serious risks to public safety.
The department affirmed that it will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to intensify operations and ensure that DUKE and surrounding areas remain safe from illegal street racing activities.
