A graphic designer was charged at the Sessions Court here today for allegedly posting offensive content intended to insult Islam two years ago.

The accused, 47-year-old Yeo Li Yin, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read before Judge Izralizam Sanusi.

According to the charge, Yeo is accused of creating and initiating a communication deemed offensive with the intent to hurt others’ feelings via her Twitter account under the username ‘Liyin Yeo’ on June 19, 2023.

The post was later detected by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) in Bukit Aman at 2:15 PM on June 22, 2023.

She was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, up to one year in prison, or both, if convicted. Additionally, a further fine of RM1,000 per day applies for each day the offence continues after conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Faizah Khalilah Zaberi proposed bail of RM15,000 with one surety.

However, defence lawyer Rajsurian Pillai requested a lower amount, citing that the accused has no stable income and is the primary caretaker for her 80-year-old father.

The court then granted bail at RM7,000 with one surety and scheduled the case for mention on September 8, 2025.
