Kuala Lumpur: His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, has officially presented the Letter of Credence to Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram bin Yaakob, appointing him as the new Ambassador of Malaysia to the United States of America.
The official ceremony took place today at Istana Negara, in the presence of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Mohamad bin Haji Alamin and Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Sri Amran bin Mohamed Zin.
Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram brings over 35 years of distinguished experience in public service and diplomacy. A native of Pahang, he holds a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Ecology from Universiti Malaya and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 2009.
He began his diplomatic career in 1988 as an administrative and diplomatic officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His most senior role to date was as Secretary General of the Ministry, a position he held from January 6, 2019, to May 31, 2022.
Over the years, Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram has held several significant diplomatic postings. He previously served as Ambassador of Malaysia to the State of Qatar and Ambassador to Austria, as well as Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations in New York.
In his capacity at the Foreign Ministry, he has played key leadership roles, including Deputy Secretary General for Bilateral Affairs, Director General of the ASEAN-Malaysia National Secretariat during Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2015, and Undersecretary of the Multilateral Political Division.
His past diplomatic assignments have also taken him to Vienna, Austria; Washington, D.C., United States; and Beijing, People’s Republic of China, further cementing his extensive international experience.
His appointment as Malaysia’s top envoy to the United States reflects the government’s confidence in his ability to further strengthen the long-standing bilateral relations between Malaysia and the U.S.
