BUKIT MERTAJAM: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim agreed to provide allocations and allowances for Form Six students through the Budget to be tabled in October.

According to him, the matter will be announced in the Budget as an effort to help the students involved.

“I say, from Year One to Form Five, there is an allowance. University students also have an allowance. But Form Six students, which is pre-university, do not receive an allowance.

“So, I have announced that in our Budget this October, I will approve allocations and allowances for Form Six students,” he said when delivering a speech at the “Temu Anwar” session in conjunction with the “Ambang Merdeka Sahabat Madani” at the Tunku Bainun Campus Institute of Teacher Education here on Friday.

Also present was Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek.

However, Anwar said the amount of the allowance has not yet been determined and depends on the government’s financial capability.

According to him, the step reflects the government’s commitment to expand access to quality education and ensure no student is left behind due to their socioeconomic background.

Earlier, Fadhlina in her speech said the proposal to provide allowances to Form Six students was among the 12 resolutions raised at the Pra-University Madani Congress held in Klang.

She said the Ministry of Education (MOE) accepted all the resolutions submitted by student representatives and would examine them for improvement, in addition to finding ways to ensure the proposals can be implemented.

Meanwhile, Fadhlina when met after the session said the announcement was highly anticipated news after the issue had been fought for for a long time.

She said the struggle to obtain the allowance had been submitted since she first led the Ministry of Education.

According to her, Anwar’s announcement on the matter proves that the effort has finally borne fruit.

“I record my thanks to the Prime Minister for the announcement regarding the Form Six allowance.

“This is the awaited news. I think the struggle to obtain this allowance has been submitted since I became Education Minister and alhamdulillah, for this budget, it will become a reality,” she said.

She also expressed appreciation to Form Six pre-university students nationwide who have consistently fought for the issue year after year.

She said the matter was also among the resolutions raised by students in their congress held on Friday morning.

“This morning at the congress, one of the matters raised was regarding the allowance and this afternoon, alhamdulillah Datuk Seri (Anwar) announced that it will become a reality.

“I record my thanks. This is among the important reforms in education, particularly to look after the welfare and uplift pre-university students of the MOE by providing this allowance,” she said.

She said the provision of the allowance also reflects the government’s efforts to continue uplifting the nation’s education.
