KUALA LUMPUR: The population of Greater Kuala Lumpur is currently estimated to exceed 8.8 million, with an annual growth rate of 2.25 percent compared to the previous year, according to Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories).

Bernama reports that this number is expected to continue growing, reaching 9.8 million by 2030. This rapid development necessitates Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to be more proactive in planning and providing infrastructure.

“This population growth involves not only a natural increase in the urban area but also a high rate of migration from rural areas.

“This puts pressure on the existing infrastructure and demands that we provide better basic services for all city dwellers to ensure Kuala Lumpur becomes a livable city. Issues such as air pollution and lack of green spaces are also among the main concerns that need to be addressed,” she said.

She made these comments at the launch of the 10 Guidelines for Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Planning 2024 at Menara 1 DBKL yesterday.

To address these challenges, Dr. Zaliha said DBKL, as the local authority, needs to remain responsive to the current needs and demands of development in the capital to ensure a high quality of life.

“Every development decision must be made with careful consideration to ensure a balance between development and the well-being of city residents,” she said.

Regarding the launch of the guidelines, Dr. Zaliha mentioned that the aim is to ensure good governance practices at DBKL, with each development planning step being monitored more effectively. This also involves evaluating the effectiveness of policies and strategies implemented and promoting continuous improvement.

“Each guideline is the result of detailed studies and consultations with various stakeholders. With this inclusive approach, I hope it will have a positive impact on all city residents,” she said.

Among the guidelines are those covering MADANI residential planning, MADANI hawker space facilities, electric vehicle charging station development planning, and low-carbon building reviews.

All these guidelines will be made available to the public through the DBKL website for reference by all parties.
