ALOR SETAR: Two areas in this state, namely Alor Setar and Sungai Petani, recorded Air Pollution Index (API) readings at unhealthy levels, as of 10 am today.

Data from the Malaysian Air Pollution Index Management System (APIMS) portal shows Alor Setar recorded an API of 152, while Sungai Petani recorded an API of 155.

In addition, Langkawi and Kulim Hi-Tech recorded air quality at moderate levels, with API readings of 87 and 89 respectively.

Meanwhile, the Kedah State Health Department advised the public to reduce the duration and intensity of strenuous outdoor physical activities.

“When the reading is at an unhealthy level (101–200), high‑risk groups such as children, the elderly and individuals with heart disease or respiratory problems need to be more cautious.

“Limit outdoor activities and use appropriate respiratory protection when needing to be outdoors, drink enough water, avoid smoking and stay away from areas with smoke or pollution,” it said.

In fact, high‑risk groups should get checked and seek treatment at nearby health facilities if they experience coughing, shortness of breath, stinging or watery eyes, chest pain or worsening health symptoms.

“Do not wait for the air to get worse. Protect yourself, reduce exposure and always be aware of the current air quality readings,” it said.
