UMNO Reaffirms Support for Unity Government, Keeps Options Open for Future Political Cooperation

KUALA LUMPUR : The United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Malaysia’s Unity Government while maintaining its right to determine the party’s direction and political strategy ahead of future elections.

The decision was among several resolutions adopted during the UMNO Supreme Council (Majlis Kerja Tertinggi) meeting held on Tuesday, according to a media statement issued by UMNO Secretary-General Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

In the statement, UMNO reiterated its support for the Unity Government formed after the 15th General Election under the decree of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, stating that the party would continue backing the federal administration until the next general election.

The party also clarified that the political agreement underpinning the Unity Government at the federal level does not automatically apply to state governments. UMNO noted that the Johor state administration was established before the formation of the Unity Government and did not involve parties from Pakatan Harapan.

As future elections approach, including the anticipated state elections in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, UMNO stressed that it retains full authority to determine its own political stance, electoral strategy and direction.

The Supreme Council further rejected claims that efforts by UMNO and the Barisan Nasional to safeguard their mandates at the state level amount to a betrayal of the federal government. Instead, the party described such actions as a legitimate democratic practice that allows voters to decide the future direction of governance.

UMNO also signaled its willingness to work with any political party or group if such cooperation contributes to political stability and public well-being. However, the party emphasized that any collaboration must be built on sincerity, mutual trust and shared commitment.

Political observers view the latest resolutions as a clear indication that UMNO remains committed to preserving the stability of the Unity Government while simultaneously safeguarding its political independence and flexibility ahead of future electoral contests.

The resolutions were adopted during the party’s highest decision-making meeting held at UMNO headquarters in Menara Dato’ Onn, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
