KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has underscored the importance of cultivating a strong reading culture as a key driver of knowledge, character development, and national progress during the opening of the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) 2026.

Speaking at the official launch of the annual event on Sunday, Anwar stressed that reading plays a vital role in broadening perspectives, shaping values, and nurturing an informed and enlightened society.

The Ministry of Education welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of a new book voucher initiative for secondary school and higher education students, which is expected to benefit more than two million students under the ministry’s supervision.

According to the ministry, the initiative reflects the MADANI Government’s continued commitment to encouraging reading habits and promoting lifelong learning, particularly among younger generations.

The Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2026, which runs from June 1 to June 7, features more than 1,200 exhibition booths showcasing a wide range of books, educational materials, and literary activities for visitors.

Organisers are encouraging Malaysians to take advantage of the ongoing school holiday season to visit the fair and explore the diverse offerings available throughout the week-long event.

Held under the theme “Malaysia Membaca: Merayakan Buku” (Malaysia Reads: Celebrating Books), the fair aims to inspire greater appreciation for reading and strengthen the nation’s literary culture.

The event remains one of the largest and most anticipated book festivals in the region, bringing together publishers, authors, educators, and book lovers from across the country and beyond.
