PENAMPANG, Sabah: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim joined thousands of Sabahans in celebrating the Kaamatan Festival in Penampang, highlighting national unity, cultural diversity, and the state’s growing role in Malaysia’s development.

The Prime Minister said he was delighted by the vibrant celebrations involving various ethnic communities, particularly the Kadazan, Dusun, Murut and Rungus groups, noting the rich cultural performances, traditional dances, and strong spirit of togetherness displayed during the festival.

This marks his third attendance at the Kaamatan Festival as prime minister, which he described as more than a traditional celebration but a symbol of Malaysia’s strength in preserving harmony amid diversity.

Anwar also acknowledged Sabah’s increasing importance as a key driver of national growth, pointing to rising investments, expanding tourism, and ongoing infrastructure development that reflect the state’s strong economic potential.

He said the government understands the sentiments of Sabahans who seek fair development and the continued protection of state rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). In this regard, he reaffirmed the MADANI government’s commitment to implementing Sabah’s special grant based on the 40 per cent revenue entitlement outlined in MA63.

While the new formula is being finalised with the Sabah state government, Anwar announced an increase in the interim special grant for Sabah from RM600 million to RM1.5 billion. He said the nearly RM1 billion increase demonstrates the MADANI government’s commitment to ensuring fair treatment and equitable development for the state.

The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation to the people of Sabah for their warm reception and hospitality, adding that he left Penampang with renewed confidence in Sabah’s bright future and Malaysia’s shared prosperity agenda.

He concluded with a Kaamatan greeting: “Kotobian Om Taun, Sikaan Tadau Tagazo Do Kaamatan.”
