KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor government will focus on strengthening the education support system and increasing student involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through the 2027 State Budget.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the focus includes efforts to maintain academic excellence and provide more space for student involvement in STEM.

He said the effort is important given that Selangor has about one million students, hence their improved achievement can bring a significant impact on society and the nation.

“Through the budget, we will strengthen their involvement in STEM and there are several efforts… so that they can serve the community.

“If this one million (students) achieve excellent results, there will be a positive impact on society and will give a very positive impetus to the country,” he told reporters after officiating the Gombak Sixth Form College and the 2026 Academic Excellence Awards ceremony in Gombak here today.

Regarding efforts to upgrade school infrastructure, Amirudin said the state government is currently gathering detailed information on the matter before any allocations are finalised.

He said in addition, the state government has also introduced the Selangor Sixth Form Student Assembly (HIPSTERS) as a support platform for students in preparation before entering higher education institutions.

Through the programme, book vouchers and free Internet data are also provided for Sixth Form students, with the number of book voucher recipients involving 10,000 people this year compared to only university students previously, he said.

He said the state government is ready to consider expanding the book vouchers and free Internet data to involve more Sixth Form students in the future based on needs and demand.
