Malaysia Highlights ASEAN Centrality and Defence Modernisation at Shangri-La Dialogue 2026

SINGAPORE: Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to regional security, ASEAN centrality, and defence modernisation during an interview with Bloomberg held alongside the Shangri-La Dialogue 2026 in Singapore.

The discussion covered a wide range of regional and global security issues, including the importance of maintaining ASEAN’s central role in addressing geopolitical challenges and ensuring stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Malaysia also underscored the significance of safeguarding freedom of navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Malacca, while addressing increasingly complex security threats emerging from the evolving global geopolitical landscape.

As part of its defence transformation efforts, Malaysia highlighted initiatives aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the Malaysian Armed Forces through asymmetric warfare strategies. These include the development of drones, unmanned systems, and other emerging defence technologies designed to meet contemporary security requirements.

The government further emphasised the importance of advancing the local defence industry through technology transfer, innovation, and capacity-building initiatives. Such efforts are intended to enhance national self-reliance and ensure the long-term readiness and sustainability of Malaysia’s defence capabilities.

Malaysia reiterated that strengthening domestic defence expertise and industrial capacity remains a key priority in safeguarding national interests and responding effectively to future security challenges.

The interview provided an opportunity for Malaysia to share its perspectives on regional and global security matters with an international audience while reinforcing its commitment to peace, stability, and cooperation in the region.
