HULU TERENGGANU: A 23-year-old woman has been remanded for four days until October 21 to assist investigations into the discovery of a headless baby’s body at the Padang Setengge Housing Estate here last Friday.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Nur Athirah Hashim at the Kuala Berang Magistrate’s Court here today.

Hulu Terengganu District Police Chief Superintendent Sharudin Abdul Wahab said the woman was arrested at 3.30 pm yesterday, and the case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code.

The section concerns the offence of concealing a birth by secretly disposing of or hiding a baby’s body, regardless of whether the baby died before, during or after birth.

“Upon conviction, the individual may face imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both,” he said.

Earlier, the baby’s body was reportedly discovered in a drain in an incomplete state by a resident of the Padang Setengge Housing Estate while washing clothes behind the house.

A post-mortem examination conducted at the Forensic Unit of Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu revealed that the baby had died more than 24 hours before the body was discovered.
