GEORGE TOWN: A devastating fire that tore through the historic former Odeon Theatre building along Jalan Penang on Saturday night has claimed one life, according to authorities.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed the fatality after visiting the scene shortly after receiving reports of the blaze. He was accompanied by Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying to assess the situation and obtain updates from emergency responders.

Speaking in a statement, Chow said firefighters acted swiftly to contain the fire and successfully prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings, including properties along Jalan Sri Bahari.

“The Fire and Rescue Department has confirmed that one fatality has been reported so far. I understand that the premises had not yet commenced operations at the time of the incident,” he said.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, while investigations are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage and losses.

Chow extended his condolences to the family of the victim and expressed appreciation to firefighters and emergency personnel for their rapid response and professionalism.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all firefighters and emergency responders for their dedication in protecting nearby residents and properties,” he added.

The fire, which was reported at approximately 8.50pm, continued to burn nearly two hours later. According to the Fire and Rescue Department, the double-storey structure sustained an estimated 50 per cent damage.

A total of 25 firefighters were deployed to the scene as efforts to fully extinguish the blaze continued throughout the night.

The iconic Odeon building, a well-known landmark in George Town, was once a popular cinema showcasing both Western and Asian films. Although it ceased operations as a cinema more than a decade ago, the building remained recognisable due to its historic façade and prominent Odeon signage.

Over the years, the property changed ownership several times and was eventually converted into an entertainment venue before the tragic fire occurred.
