KUALA LUMPUR|| July 6: In the lead-up to the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and related events, Malaysia has laid the foundation for a smooth and coordinated summit through a series of high-level bilateral engagements with senior ASEAN officials.

On Sunday, Foreign Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin held four strategic meetings with representatives from Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Brunei to align priorities and fine-tune preparations ahead of the regional gathering.

The discussions focused on agenda-setting, finalizing joint outcome documents, and resolving logistical and protocol arrangements to ensure seamless proceedings. These early talks also aimed to foster closer coordination among ASEAN member states on pressing regional issues that will be raised at the ministerial level.

Amran began the day by meeting Cambodian Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Kung Phoak. He then held talks with Indonesia’s Director General for ASEAN Cooperation, Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro, followed by meetings with Thailand’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Eksiri Pintaruchi, and Brunei’s Permanent Secretary (ASEAN) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Johariah Abdul Wahab.

Each session lasted over 30 minutes and reflected Malaysia’s proactive diplomatic approach in ensuring unity and coherence among ASEAN members ahead of the high-level summit.

The 58th AMM and related meetings will take place from July 8 to 11 in Kuala Lumpur, under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” reflecting the priorities of Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship for 2025. This is the fifth time Malaysia has assumed the ASEAN Chair, having previously led the bloc in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.

This year’s AMM will feature 24 ministerial-level meetings, including discussions with ASEAN Dialogue Partners and Sectoral Dialogue Partners. Around 1,500 delegates are expected to attend, including foreign ministers from ASEAN member states, Timor-Leste, ASEAN Dialogue Partners, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) participants, and representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat.

Malaysia’s strategic groundwork through early bilateral consultations is seen as essential in ensuring a successful and impactful AMM, particularly as the region faces complex geopolitical challenges and rising global tensions.
