PUTRAJAYA, July 23 (Voice of Malaysia): The Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) has welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement that Monday, 15 September 2025, will be declared an additional public holiday in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebrations.

This move is seen as a joyful gesture for both public and private sector employees across the nation, offering a meaningful opportunity for Malaysians to come together in the spirit of national unity while appreciating the unique multicultural fabric of the country.

“This additional holiday allows Malaysians to celebrate unity, strengthen national pride, and reflect on the significance of Malaysia’s formation as a multiracial, multi-religious, and multicultural nation,” said Human Resources Minister YB Steven Sim Chee Keong in a statement.

The extended holiday weekend also serves as a chance for workers to rest, recharge, and enjoy leisure activities, contributing positively to their overall well-being. It is also expected to generate a boost for local tourism and economic activity, especially in community-level businesses and service sectors.

The implementation of this additional public holiday will be guided by the existing provisions under Malaysian labor laws:

  • Section 60D(1) of the Employment Act 1955 [Act 265] for Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan,

  • Sabah Labour Ordinance (Chapter 67),

  • Sarawak Labour Ordinance (Chapter 76), and

  • Public Holidays Act 1951 [Act 369]—which serves as the legal basis for the government’s official holiday declaration.

Employers are required to comply with this new public holiday and may choose from the following options:

  1. Grant the public holiday and pay normal wages;

  2. Require employees to work and compensate them according to public holiday rates;

  3. Provide a replacement holiday on another day if employees are required to work on 15 September.

To ensure smooth and fair implementation, the Department of Labour (JTK) nationwide is prepared to provide advisory services and respond to any inquiries from employers or employees.

For further information, the public can contact the JTKSM hotline at 03-8886 5192 / 5937, email jtksm@mohr.gov.my, or visit the nearest JTK office.

Minister Steven Sim also called on all Malaysians to embrace the spirit of Malaysia Day, using the holiday as a time to reflect on the values of unity, harmony, and shared prosperity.
