KUALA LUMPUR: Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has publicly acknowledged shared responsibility with Khairy Jamaluddin for past conflicts that led to Khairy’s expulsion, marking a significant shift in tone as Umno seeks to rebuild unity.
Speaking during his closing address at Umno’s 80th anniversary convention at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on May 2, Zahid stressed the importance of accountability and reconciliation within the party.
“We must be brave enough to admit past mistakes. For Khairy, yes, I admit I made mistakes, but you also made errors,” he said, in remarks seen as opening the door for renewed cooperation.
Zahid, who also chairs Barisan Nasional, emphasized that Umno must learn from its internal weaknesses, adapt to changing political realities, and avoid divisions that could weaken its future prospects.
The comments follow a recent decision by Umno’s Supreme Council to allow Khairy’s return under the “Rumah Bangsa” initiative, a move aimed at reuniting former members and strengthening party cohesion ahead of future elections.
Party secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed that the council had also agreed to readmit, without conditions, thousands of members who had previously been suspended, expelled, or had left the party.
In January 2023, Umno expelled Khairy and Noh Omar, while Hishammuddin Hussein and several others were suspended for six years over alleged acts of sabotage during the 15th General Election campaign.
Calling on party members to regroup, Zahid urged unity and resilience as Umno prepares for upcoming political challenges.
“I do not promise an easy path, nor a struggle free of challenges, but as long as I am entrusted, I will continue to sacrifice to carry on this legacy,” he said.
The latest developments signal a broader effort within Umno to reconcile internal differences and consolidate its position in Malaysia’s evolving political landscape.
