TEHRAN: In a continuation of attacks on Iran’s academic and civilian infrastructure, the US-Israeli coalition reportedly targeted Sharif University of Technology in Tehran early Monday, causing damage to parts of the campus.
According to local reports, the mosque building within the university sustained structural damage during the airstrike. Mohsen Dodangeh, mayor of Tehran’s District 9, confirmed that the university’s gas post was also hit, leading to an explosion. The blast prompted temporary evacuation of nearby homes, and authorities have cut off the gas supply as a precaution.
Masoud Tajrishi, head of Sharif University of Technology, told IRNA that one of the scientific and cultural center buildings was damaged, with nearby structures also affected. “Sharif University is a scientific institution dedicated to the development of culture and science. It was damaged due to the brutality of the enemies of this land,” he said.
Tajrishi added that reconstruction of the damaged parts will begin soon, emphasizing the institution’s goal of supporting Iran’s emergence as a “major scientific power” globally. No casualties were reported in the attack, and investigations have been launched to assess the full extent of the damage.
The university is not the first academic institution targeted in recent weeks. Shahid Beheshti University and the University of Science and Technology in Tehran, the Faculty of Pharmacy at Shiraz University, and Isfahan University of Technology, as well as parts of the Science and Technology and Veterinary campuses at Urmia University, have all reportedly been struck amid ongoing US-Israeli aggression.
Officials condemned the attacks as “cowardly” and highlighted the deliberate targeting of Iran’s civilian infrastructure and energy facilities, which has resulted in hundreds of casualties nationwide.
