UN Rights Chief Calls for Urgent Action as Global Islamophobia Rises

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has warned of a growing worldwide surge in anti-Muslim hatred, urging governments, technology companies, and the public to take immediate steps to address the issue.

Volker Türk issued the warning on Sunday, marking the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, highlighting increasing hostility, discrimination, and violence against Muslims in many parts of the world.

In a social media statement, Türk said Muslims globally are facing rising levels of harassment, particularly amid ongoing tensions and conflict in the Middle East, which he noted have contributed to a spike in online abuse.

“On this International Day to Combat Islamophobia, we honor Muslims around the world, whose contributions make communities stronger and societies richer,” he said. “And we sound the alarm about a mounting wave of Islamophobia.”

According to Türk, recent studies indicate that anti-Muslim harassment and violence have increased across multiple regions. He said the trend is reflected both online and in daily life.

He reported that Muslims are being targeted in public spaces, including attacks in streets and schools. Mosques have been vandalized, and hateful content is spreading across social media platforms, often disproportionately targeting women and girls who wear the hijab.

Türk also warned that discrimination can extend to institutional settings. In some countries, Muslims face barriers in employment, housing, healthcare, and other essential services, with certain forms of bias reportedly embedded in national laws.

Calling for stronger global responses, he emphasized that states have a responsibility to protect all individuals, including Muslims, from violence and harassment.

“Islamophobia must be addressed with the same seriousness and urgency as other forms of hatred and discrimination,” he said, urging coordinated international efforts to combat rising intolerance worldwide.
