KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27: United States President Donald Trump has lauded Malaysia as a “great and very vibrant country” following his two-day visit to Kuala Lumpur for the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings.
Speaking to reporters before his departure, Trump expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s hospitality and the strong leadership shown by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship.
“Malaysia has done a tremendous job hosting the summit. Prime Minister Anwar is a strong leader, and this country has great potential to play a leading role in the region,” Trump said.
The visit also saw renewed optimism over global economic stability, as senior US and Chinese officials held a series of discussions on the sidelines of the summit. Both sides hinted that significant progress has been achieved toward a deal aimed at de-escalating ongoing trade tensions.
A joint statement released late Sunday indicated that further negotiations will continue in Washington next month, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to “constructive dialogue and mutual economic growth.”
Observers noted that the ASEAN platform has once again proven vital in promoting dialogue between major powers, with Malaysia’s chairmanship receiving praise for its balanced and diplomatic approach.
The summit concluded with the adoption of several key documents, including the ASEAN-US Vision Statement 2025, which outlines a shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and regional connectivity.
Trump’s visit marked his first official trip to Malaysia since returning to the White House, and his engagement with regional leaders underscored Washington’s renewed focus on Southeast Asia as a strategic and economic partner.
