PHNOM PENH, Oct 8 :A Thai chef has reportedly died in Cambodia after being denied emergency medical treatment because he lacked the necessary identification and immigration documents, sparking outrage and calls for an investigation into the incident.

According to local media reports, the man identified only as a Thai national in his 40s fell seriously ill while working at a restaurant in Phnom Penh earlier this week. Colleagues rushed him to a nearby hospital, but staff allegedly refused to admit him, citing the absence of legal documents and proof of identity.

Witnesses claimed that despite his critical condition, the hospital insisted on documentation before providing medical assistance. The chef later succumbed to his illness while attempts were being made to transfer him to another facility.

Human rights groups and social media users across Thailand and Cambodia have condemned the hospital’s actions, saying that denying emergency care violates basic humanitarian principles and medical ethics.

“This is a tragic reminder that access to healthcare should never depend on a person’s immigration status,” said one Cambodian rights advocate, urging authorities to ensure accountability and prevent similar cases in the future.

The Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh has reportedly contacted Cambodian officials to obtain more information and arrange the repatriation of the deceased’s remains.Authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but both Thai and Cambodian social media platforms have been flooded with expressions of grief and anger over what many are calling a “needless and inhumane death.”
