CYBERJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today officiated the launch of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE) at Multimedia University (MMU), marking a new milestone in Malaysia’s efforts to strengthen digital and AI capabilities.

In his speech, Anwar highlighted that digital transformation is central to the MADANI economy, but technological advancement must progress in tandem with cultural values and national identity.
“We must ‘reach for the skies’ with AI and new technologies, but remain ‘rooted to the ground’ with principles, values, and identity,” he said.
Anwar reiterated that under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), the government’s strategy is to “raise the ceiling” for technological and economic growth, “raise the floor” to ensure inclusivity, and strengthen governance as the foundation. Without strong governance, he warned, reforms risk leading to corruption, cronyism, and injustice.

Referring to findings in reports by the United Nations University (UNU) and McKinsey, Anwar cautioned against the “AI Productivity Paradox,” noting that heavy investments in AI do not automatically translate into real productivity gains. He stressed the need for measurable outcomes that directly benefit the people.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of nurturing young Malaysian talent to master AI, not merely relying on Western frameworks. “We must produce designers, creators, and drivers of technology grounded in our identity,” he said.

Anwar also underscored that true education goes beyond technical knowledge. He warned that progress would be meaningless if Malaysia remained trapped in a culture of hatred, racial division, bullying, and corruption. Education, he said, must uplift humanity through ethics, values, and mutual respect.
Following the launch, Anwar engaged with MMU students in a “Temu Anwar” dialogue session, where participants shared concerns about employment, cost of living, reliance on AI, and the dangers of racism to national unity.
“I remain optimistic about Malaysia’s young generation. With knowledge, values, and courage, we can make this nation strong and great. Do not let divisive voices cloud our vision,” Anwar concluded.
