PETALING JAYA: Selangor recorded the highest number of sexual crime cases in the country for a period of three years.

The Chief Assistant Director of the Sexual, Women and Children Division (D11) of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, Siti Kamsiah Hassan, said that recorded included obscenity, incest, unnatural, child pornography and sexual communication.

She said the statistics were recorded based on the high population of Selangor compared to other states.

“The position of Selangor which borders several states such as Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur and Pahang is one of the contributors to this crime followed by Johor.

“Easy access to the internet network system in addition to many facilities in terms of facilities and population density, in addition to economic factors drive the increase in the number of sexual crimes,” she said after a dialogue session with the community at IPK Selangor, according to Sinar Harian.

She said, most of the recorded cases involve local citizens, which is 90% and some also involve foreigners.

“For example, obscenity cases such as at petrol stations, public transport involve foreigners who live here, besides there are some cases related to tourists, but in terms of the highest percentage, they are local citizens,” she said.

Siti Kamsiah said that most of the perpetrators of sexual crimes are known to the victims, whether they are family members, friends or trusted people such as teachers.

“However, sexual criminals are difficult to recognize through their appearance or character and easily attract the trust of victims,” she said.

She said, B40 is one of the highest groups involved in sexual crimes based on statistics recorded during the period.

“We see it as a whole due to the unstable economic situation of this group in addition to factors such as unemployment and lack of education.

“This economic aspect leads to the problem of emotional stress and affects emotional relationships and lack of education in the context of parenting,” she said.
