School Inspectors to Conduct Nationwide Safety Audits: Education DG

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 26 :  The Education Ministry has directed the chief of the School Inspectorate (Jemaah Nazir) to mobilize inspectors across the country to carry out comprehensive safety audits in schools.

Education director-general Dr. Mohd Azam Ahmad said the findings of these audits must be submitted to him on a weekly basis for presentation to the minister, along with recommendations for immediate action.

“This initiative will enable us to review the overall situation. With these efforts, insya-Allah, we can strengthen safety measures in schools and hostels, especially for our children and the school community,” he said during a special press conference today.

The move comes in the wake of recent incidents in schools, including the case of a Form Three student who fell from the third floor of a school dormitory in Sabak Bernam, reported earlier today.

Responding to concerns over recurring accidents, Dr. Mohd Azam announced the establishment of the Education Institution Safety Reform Committee, which includes academics, NGOs, police, safety experts, and representatives from the Parents, Community, and Private Sector Involvement (PIBKS).

“I have instructed the committee to review all standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to handling bullying, sexual harassment, and school safety. The committee, led by the Daily School Management Division director, has already begun assessing existing hostel and school procedures to identify those that need improvement or replacement,” he said.

He added that all senior officials at the ministry, State Education Departments, and District Education Offices have also been directed to conduct unannounced visits to schools and hostels at any time.

According to Dr. Mohd Azam, the monitoring will ensure accurate information is collected for use by the special committee tasked with revising and strengthening school safety procedures, as well as improving the dissemination of safety guidelines nationwide.
