Ronaldo Believes Portugal Possess the Best Squad
LISBON: Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted he feels “very positive” before departing Lisbon with the Portugal squad for their World Cup training camp in Palm Beach, Florida.
“We are approaching this tournament with high hopes,” said the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“Preparations have gone very well, although tiring because we have worked hard,” said the veteran Portugal captain, while asserting that he is in good physical condition.
“I am very positive, I believe everything will go well and we will put on a good performance. It is a very good generation, which will bring a lot of joy to the Portuguese people.
“The most important thing is to start the campaign well in the first match, then followed by the second and third matches… finishing as group winners and after that taking it one match at a time.”
Portugal will open their World Cup campaign this Thursday in Houston against DR Congo before facing Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.
At the age of 41, Ronaldo will be playing in a record sixth World Cup, yet there are concerns from some quarters that his presence might prevent Roberto Martinez’s side from developing to its full potential.
Portugal went through two friendly matches against Chile and Nigeria previously, recording 2-1 victories in both matches, but Ronaldo failed to score.
Portugal finished third at the 1966 World Cup and reached the quarter-finals four years ago in Qatar. – AFP
