MEXICO CITY : A non-Mexican fan suffered a heart attack outside the Azteca Stadium just before the World Cup opening match in Mexico City on Thursday between Mexico and South Africa, reported the German news agency (dpa).

The man was rushed to a hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities in the Mexican capital initially did not disclose details of the man’s nationality in a statement on platform X, but confirmed that he is not a Mexican citizen.

Hot weather is expected to be a widespread problem for players and fans throughout the longest-ever World Cup, which is jointly hosted by the United States (US), Mexico and Canada. Mexico City is also located in a high-altitude area.
