KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed the vital role of ethical and responsible journalism in safeguarding democracy and ensuring the public receives accurate and credible information, particularly amid the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and the growing flow of unverified digital content.

Speaking at the Malam Wartawan Malaysia MPI 2026 (Malaysia Journalists’ Night 2026), Anwar described the event as a tribute to media practitioners across the country who work tirelessly to deliver truthful, balanced and beneficial information to the people.

The Prime Minister also congratulated Sinar Harian for winning the prestigious Kajai Award, Malaysia’s highest honour in journalism, describing the achievement as a recognition of excellence and dedication within the profession.

In his address, Anwar highlighted the growing challenges facing the media industry in the era of artificial intelligence and borderless information, where misinformation and disinformation can spread rapidly across digital platforms.

He stressed that journalism founded on facts, integrity and accountability has never been more important.

“Technology should be embraced to strengthen the delivery of information, but it must never erode the human values, sound judgement and rigorous fact-checking that form the foundation of journalism,” he said.

The Prime Minister noted that while AI offers significant opportunities to improve news production and information dissemination, it cannot replace the ethical responsibility and editorial discipline exercised by professional journalists.

Anwar also underscored the importance of a free and responsible media in shaping an informed society, strengthening democratic institutions and fostering a culture of knowledge and constructive public discourse.

He said independent journalism plays a crucial role in promoting transparency, encouraging accountability and ensuring that citizens have access to reliable information needed to make informed decisions.

Calling on media practitioners to remain steadfast in their mission, Anwar urged journalists to continue defending professional ethics and to serve as voices of truth despite the increasingly complex information landscape.

“Continue to be the voice of truth, uphold journalistic ethics and carry this responsibility with courage for the benefit of the people and the future of our nation,” he said.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come as Malaysia’s media industry continues adapting to rapid technological changes while balancing innovation with the core principles of accuracy, credibility and public trust.
