PJ Flood Mitigation Plan To Be Implemented Immediately, Involves 39 Projects Worth RM40.56 Million
SHAH ALAM: The State Government has prepared an Immediate and Medium‑Term Flood Mitigation Plan for Petaling Jaya, involving the implementation of 39 project scopes at a total cost of RM40.56 million.
Infrastructure Exco Dato’ Ir Izham Hashim said the plan, which will be implemented immediately, is expected to reduce flood risks while also increasing the level of preparedness and resilience of the affected areas in facing the challenges of climate change.
He said a total of 12 hotspot areas in Petaling Jaya have been identified, including three critical areas, namely Seksyen 51A, Kampung Cempaka, and Jalan Kuala Selangor (FT54).
“The scope of work includes upgrading and increasing river capacity, construction of outlet structures, maintenance of drainage systems, construction of flood retention ponds, and installation of flood warning systems.
“This plan is implemented through strategic collaboration between the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Public Works Department (JKR), and other technical agencies to ensure each project can be implemented effectively,” he said.
He said this at a press conference at his office in the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Building here today, which was also attended by Petaling Jaya Mayor, Dato’ Mohamad Zahri Samingon.
Izham said the mitigation plan was drawn up following a working visit and site inspection conducted last May to seek a comprehensive solution to the flash flood issue in Petaling Jaya.
He said, following that, the State Executive Council (MMKN) yesterday also agreed to implement direct appointments for immediate projects to ensure all projects can be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
“In other local authority (PBT) areas, most flood solutions have been completed. Even in Meru, flood incidents are decreasing. What we have planned has been implemented and, alhamdulillah, it has been successful,” he said.
Last week, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds caused at least eight locations around Petaling Jaya to be hit by flash floods, in addition to one fallen tree incident.
Among the areas that were flooded were Jalan 222; Jalan 1A/71G (Jalan Carey) and Jalan 14/1 near the Kelana Jaya FAS Tunnel; Kampung Cempaka; Medan Selera 223; Jalan Seroja, Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara; and Lorong 16/7A, Seksyen 16.
The incident was the third flash flood to hit Petaling Jaya this year, following similar occurrences in April and May.
