Football Community Urged To Oust Infantino

ZURICH: Former President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), Sepp Blatter, has urged the global football community to remove Gianni Infantino from the leadership of the world governing body.

Infantino has faced severe criticism after the organisation of the 2026 World Cup became influenced by politics, which allowed the red card of United States (US) striker Folarin Balogun to be overturned and permitted him to play in the round of 16 against Belgium.

Blatter, who was previously embroiled in an abuse of power scandal during his tenure as FIFA President, said the 2026 World Cup competition has lost its credibility following several dubious decisions made.

“The longest World Cup campaign has finally drawn to a close with a team truly deserving of being champions. However, throughout the competition, it has lost credibility due to several incidents.

“Politics should not be allowed to influence the game. Now it is up to the fans, players, and every national association to ensure FIFA is led by the right person,” he said.

Earlier, Infantino was said to have received a call from United States President Donald Trump requesting that Balogun’s red card be overturned to allow the player to feature against Belgium.

The decision drew heavy criticism from the global football community, including Belgium coach Rudi Garcia, who was unhappy with FIFA’s unprofessional action.
