KUALA LUMPUR: Meta Platforms Inc (META) was summoned to the Prime Minister’s Office today to provide an explanation regarding the action of blocking several posts on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.

According to Berita Harian, this issue is related to the condolence message shared by the Prime Minister for the Hamas Political Bureau Chief, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran, Iran, last week.

The same disruption occurred again last night during a live broadcast of the Palestinian Liberation Rally at the AXIATA Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

It is understood that the Prime Minister himself wanted to hear further explanations from META regarding the various disruptions and restrictions on his social media accounts.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil informed last week that META is investigating the restrictions.

Fahmi stated that the US-based company was also somewhat confused by the restrictions, but no further explanation was provided.

A review of Anwar’s Facebook account earlier revealed that three of his posts condemning Haniyeh’s killing and sharing a photo of the meeting with the Hamas leader were removed from the social media platform.

The removed photo showed Anwar with the Hamas leader, accompanied by the caption “Dangerous individuals and organizations.”

Instagram indicated that the post was taken down because it contained “symbols, praise, or support for individuals and organizations that we define as dangerous.”
