KLANG: A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to three months in prison after pleading guilty to stealing railway cables belonging to Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) in an incident that disrupted railway operations in Klang.

The sentence was handed down by the Magistrate’s Court here on Tuesday, with Magistrate Nor Azilah Mat ordering that the jail term commence from the date of the accused’s arrest.

The accused, identified as Railey Nasal, admitted to stealing 40 metres of 16-millimetre track cable and 20 metres of 2.5-millimetre cable owned by KTMB, with a total estimated value of RM850. The cables were allegedly cut and removed from the railway infrastructure.

According to court documents, the offence took place at approximately 1.20pm on June 6 along the KTM railway track near Jalan Sembilang 8E, Jalan Telok Pulai, Klang.

Railey was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, an offence punishable by up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Sulfie Abu Hassan, while the accused was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) lawyer Izzat Dzulkafli.

The case came to light after KTMB Auxiliary Police officers conducting a routine patrol with the D4 Task Force from the Criminal Investigation Department of the South Klang District Police Headquarters received information regarding a track circuit disturbance at the location.

Responding to the alert, the enforcement team discovered evidence of cable theft and successfully detained the suspect near the railway line at kilometre 36.215, Downline Klang.

KTMB has previously warned that cable theft can disrupt rail operations, compromise passenger safety and result in costly repairs to railway infrastructure.

The conviction is seen as part of ongoing efforts by authorities to curb theft and vandalism involving critical public transportation assets.
