Man detained in Japan for utilising generative AI systems to create a virus

TOKYO: A 25-year-old jobless Kawasaki man was taken into custody on suspicion of utilising online interactive generative artificial intelligence (AI) to create a computer virus.

This case is said to be the first in Japan involving the use of generative AI systems to create viruses.

Ryuki Hayashi was taken into custody by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) on May 27 because they believe he made electric or magnetic records that include directives that are not permitted.

Investigators suspect he combined knowledge about writing malware programmes with instructions he gave to many generative AI systems in March 2023 using his home computer and smartphone.

The malicious virus was engineered to carry out specific tasks, such encrypting data on targeted systems and requesting cryptocurrency as payment.

According to police, there have been no instances of the virus causing damage.

During questioning, Hayashi allegedly acknowledged the accusation and stated, “I wanted to make money through ransomware,” according to the police. Before, I believed that I could ask AI to do anything.

Platforms like ChatGPT from OpenAI have strengthened their efforts to stop output linked to illegal conduct.

However, sources claim that certain online interactive AI systems offer limitless information that might be exploited for illegal activities.

Allegedly, Hayashi instructed the AI systems while hiding the fact that he was developing the virus in order to get design data required for encrypting files and extorting a ransom.

It is alleged that he looked up ways to collect information illegally online.

The MPD is also looking into the capabilities of the generative AI he employed.

Hayashi was taken into custody by the MPD in March after he allegedly registered for a SIM card for a smartphone via fraudulent means.

Among the things taken from his house, police discovered a homemade virus on a computer. – The Japan News/Asia News Network
