KANGAR: Approximately 2,000 prisoners in Perlis have undergone the Licensed Prisoner Release Programme (PBSL) since it was introduced in 2017 as part of efforts to help them return to living in society.

Perlis State Prison Director, Senior Assistant Commissioner Ab Nasiff Sarahan said, the community rehabilitation programme gives selected prisoners the opportunity to work and earn an income before being fully released.

“When this prospect undergoes PBSL and works, he has his own income. When he is released later, he has his own money to start a new life,” he said when met during a visit to the Aza Carwash vehicle cleaning centre here today.

According to Ab Nasiff, approximately 100 Licensed Releasees are currently undergoing community rehabilitation throughout Perlis, with them working in various sectors.

“The Prisons Department also collaborates with 13 employers in this state who are willing to offer jobs to Licensed Releasees and parole prisoners. Of these 13, most are in the service sector, whether car detailing and area cleaning, besides agriculture and factories,” he said.
